Restorative Recovery: Just as important as Active Workouts

Last Spring I injured the right side of my neck and right shoulder. I was strength training when it happened. I was performing a basic skill that I had performed many times with a moderate, no so heavy, weight. On this particular morning, I performed this skill without fail, however my head was not aligned on the top of my spine and, instead, pushed forward. When I put the weight down, the right side of my neck, back and shoulder spasmed. I suddenly could not move my head. It was scary to say the least.

On the first snowy Sunday in Chicago I hopped the northbound Metra to go see my Mom. Once I got off the train she called me and suggested it would be fun to get hot cocoa at the french cafe in her neighborhood. "Okay!", I thought. It was cold out, I hadn't had much personal time with my Mom in a long while, and cozying up around some hot cocoa sounded ideal.

Goals and Resolutions

The holiday season is one of my favorite times of year. I have always enjoyed simply walking around wherever I may be living, in this case Chicago, admiring the beauitfully arranged christmas lights, observing people thoughtfully buying gifts for loved ones, sharing in some warm cocoa or spiced cider, gathering with friends and family, listening to holiday music, and feeling the "holiday cheer" all around me.
